OUR STORY
When native Chicagoan Cece Heraty moved to New York with her husband and had her first child, she was excited and nervous and had a million questions about how to raise and care for a child, and how to do so successfully in a big city. With her family and friends back home in Chicago, Cece wanted to meet other women in New York who were also experiencing motherhood for the first time, so she attended some new parent groups and instantly hit it off with a number of women. They decided to form a playgroup and began meeting on a weekly basis. While their children played, the new moms talked, laughed, and empathized about their busy city lives. With a master's degree in social work and clinical experience with special-needs children and their parents, Cece understood and appreciated how important it was for her as a new mom to have a support network of other new moms in her life. She also recognized how such a support network would benefit new moms in a big city like Chicago, so she set out to fill that need.
After contemplating the magnitude of this undertaking and realizing the enormity of its potential, Cece decided to enlist the help of Sara Lippold. Sara is an attorney who worked as in-house legal and compliance counsel for a number of financial services firms. She has also served as an advocate for women and children for several years, starting in law school when she represented victims of domestic abuse, and currently by volunteering for an organization that focuses on empowering at-risk families. After years of focusing her career on the fast-paced and heavily-regulated securities industry, Sara decided to switch gears, take a break from the corporate world, and look for an opportunity in which she could utilize her broad legal and business experience in a more creative, interesting, and positive way. Consequently, when she learned about Cece's desire to create an organization for new moms in Chicago and was invited to join the endeavor, Sara accepted without hesitation.
New City Moms is a group designed to bring new mothers and their babies together. Through our weekly luncheon series and other activities, our mission is threefold:
1. To educate new moms on a variety of essential parenting topics and skills.
2. To enable new moms to forge new friendships for themselves and their children.
3. To provide new moms with fun, informative, and convenient escapes within the city.
